pre-comments - Wow --- pharmeceutical giants at work again - I don't believe in taking drugs anyway, knowing that all drugs are toxic and must have an established LDL 50 (a value that how much and how long it takes for the drug to kill 50% of the test animals). Making imported drugs to the US illegal when prescription drugs are the number 3 or 4 killer in North America - depending on if you account for properly prescribed along with improperly prescribed.

Listen folks, you have a 9000% greater chance of dying under your doctor's care then from a gun shot in the US! So this isn't about your safety - the law is being passed for the love of money. The pharmecolgy giants have lobby groups that do not work on your behalf in congress, but on their own behalf. They do not work on your behalf with the medical industry either, their soul purpose is to sell drugs. If it doesn't work for you, they don't really care.

FDA, Pharmacy Boards Oppose Drug Imports

WASHINGTON (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The U.S. government and pharmacy groups Wednesday opposed importation of prescription drugs from other countries, following a review of action by 30 states.

Importation of cheaper prescription drugs from other countries, primarily Canada, is an illegal but growing practice among U.S. patients -- many of them the elderly who do not have prescription drug insurance coverage.

Legislation to make importation legal has bipartisan support in Congress and is supported by some policymakers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy told a news briefing Wednesday they strongly oppose importation because it is unregulated and endangers public health.

"It's almost like rolling the dice. You don't know what you're gonna get when you order medication outside of the U.S.," said Tom McGinnis, FDA director of pharmacy affairs.

McGinnis said the FDA's concerns include the potential use of unregulated ingredients, quality control, shipment and authenticity of imported drugs.

Carmen Catizone, NABP executive secretary, said the association, which represents U.S. state boards of pharmacy, has received 100 direct complaints from consumers on problems or injuries from imported drugs.

Inject the Garlic -- Cure the Cancer

REHOVOT, Israel (UPI) -- Israeli scientists have destroyed malignant tumors in mice using a chemical that occurs naturally in garlic, the Weizmann Institute reported. The key to the scientists' success lies in a unique, two-step system for delivering the cancer-wrecking chemical to the tumor cells. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute's Biological Chemistry Department describe their technique in the December issue of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics.

Allicin, the substance that gives garlic its distinctive aroma and flavor, is also a known toxic substance that can kill cancerous cells. It is composed of an enzyme, alliinase, and an inert chemical called alliin. The scientists attached alliinase to an antibody that was "programmed" to be attracted to a gastric tumor's characteristic receptors. Then they injected that alliinase-antibody combination into a cancerous mouse. Once the alliinase-antibody had settled on the tumors, the scientists alliin into the mouse. The combination of alliinase and alliin -- at the site of the tumor -- created the toxic allicin, which cured the mouse of its gastric tumors.

Intercepting the Aging Process

Over 55 percent of the North American populations are seeking complementary health through herbs and dietary supplements. It just may have something to do with these facts...


They state that from 1994, (the year that the DSHEA was passed in the U.S.) and 1999 that seniors with disabilities fell 2.6% annually. Prior to 1994, from 1989 to 1994 the decline was only 1.6% annually.


The researchers also question whether the disability drop will last. They feel that we are not going to see dramatic declines in the future. It will be interesting to see the data after 1999, particularly among Mannatech Associates.

Trash Your Sunscreen and Other Summer Sun Tips

It may seem like second nature to you to apply sunscreen before going out in the sun, as the media has been bombarding Americans with reports of the dangers of the sun for some time now, but using sunscreen is not a good way to limit your sun exposure.

Having concerns about skin cancer is valid, however, as its incidence in the United States has tripled in recent years to 54,000 cases annually, but sunscreen is one of the LAST things you want to put on your body, and sunblock does not stop skin cancer. Sunscreen is a toxic chemical that can cause problems in your system and increase your risk of disease.

The FDA regulates sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug because it contains "active" ingredients. Following is a list of active ingredients in sunscreen that the FDA classified as RASE (generally regarded as safe and effective):

* Para Amino benzoic acid (PABA)
* Avobenzone
* Cinoxate
* Dioxybenzone
* Homosalate
* Menthyl anthranilate
* Octocrylene
* Octo methoxycinnamate
* Octyl salicylate
* Oxybenzone
* Padimate O
* Phenylbenzimidazole
* Sulisobenzone
* Titanium dioxide
* Trolamine salicylate
* Zinc oxide

Potential Toxicity

Whether some of these ingredients are toxic is controversial and there are studies on either side of the issue. But recently, a study in the April 2004 Journal of Chromatography found that there is significant penetration of all sunscreen agents they studied into the skin, and oxybenzone and metabolites across the skin.

So at best when you use sunscreen your body is absorbing synthetic chemicals, and with experts' recommendations to apply generous amounts of the product every few hours, you will likely be absorbing a fair amount. It is hard to believe that all of these chemicals will not have any effect on your system. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which act as physical barriers that reflect UV rays, may be less problematic in terms of absorption.

Even though up until now studies on the potential toxicity of sunscreens are sparse and not definitive, I believe it is wise to reduce your exposure to synthetic chemicals as much as possible and I don't recommend using sunscreens at all.

Sunscreen and Vitamin D

There is another major problem with sunscreen aside from the potential chemical toxicity and that is it blocks your skin's ability to make vitamin D by more than 95 percent. If you've been reading then you are familiar with the importance of having optimal vitamin D levels and know that
regular sun exposure is the best way to achieve this.

Rather than burying your skin in sunscreen, it is clearly important to get regular sun exposure in order to have optimum health.

Sun Safety Without Sunscreen

This does not mean that we should all go out and get as much sun as we want--you must exercise caution and avoiding a burn is key.

At the beginning of the season, go out gradually and limit your exposure to perhaps as little as 10 minutes a day. Progressively increase your time in the sun so that in a few weeks you will be able
to have normal sun exposure with little risk of skin cancer. You can further avoid the damage from the sun by staying out of the sun during the harmful times from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can stay in the shade during this time or wear lightweight long sleeve shirts, long pants and a wide-brim hat.

If you are looking to give yourself further protection against skin cancer, along with not getting sunburned diet is undoubtedly important.

In 2001, the National Academy of Sciences published a comprehensive review showing that the omega 6:3 ratio was the key to preventing skin cancer development. I believe that it is the worsening omega-3:6 ratios that are at least partly responsible for the rise in skin cancer rates.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fats are both essential for human health, however the typical American consumes far too many omega-6 fats in their diet while consuming very low levels of omega-3. While the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is 1:1, our ratio of omega-6 to omega-3
averages from 20:1 to 50:1!

The primary sources of omega-6 are corn, soy, safflower and sunflower oil; these oils are overabundant in the typical diet, which explains our excess omega-6 levels. Avoid or limit these oils.

Meanwhile, omega-3 fats, found in fish oil and cod liver oil, need to be increased.

A major part of the problem is that at the beginning of 1900 we had very little processed vegetable oils, which are virtually 100 percent omega-6 fat, in our diet. In the last 100 years the U.S. population has gone from consuming virtually no vegetable fats to consuming more than 70 pounds per year. It is likely this unnaturally high consumption of omega-6 fats that is totally distorting the important omega 6:3 ratio.

So as I mentioned above, it is vital to reduce the omega-6 vegetable oils in your diet as much as possible while increasing the amount of beneficial omega-3 fats. This is an incredibly important way to prevent skin cancer and it is spelled out quite clearly in a 2000

Cancer Research study that says:

"Epidemiological, experimental, and mechanistic data implicate omega-6 fat as stimulators and long-chain omega-3 fats as inhibitors of development and progression of a range of human cancers, including melanoma."

Additionally, consuming many whole vegetables will increase antioxidant levels in the body, which will provide protection against any sun-induced radiation damage.

So if you want to benefit from the sun this summer, and I sincerely hope you do, throw away your sunscreen and use practical methods like clothing and shade to protect your skin from the sun when necessary.

Study Shows Even Little Pot Harmful

LONDON (UPI) -- Researchers warn that smoking cannabis even for only a short time, damages the lungs of young people. The researchers from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham tested smokers, non-smokers and cannabis users for lung function and their blood was also examined in a pilot study.

They found that regular cannabis smokers had poorer lung function than those who just smoked cigarettes and more severe problems than those who did not smoke at all, the London Daily Mail said. Even after less than six years of smoking the drug, the ill effects were already being seen on their breathing, the finding showed. "The consensus among many young people who use cannabis seems to be that they will not suffer any long-term effects as long as they stop smoking it early enough," Dr. Sarah Nuttall, a research fellow from the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said. "However, this is clearly not the case."

Salsa A Bacteria Stopper

(HealthDayNews) -- A compound in the herb cilantro, a key ingredient in salsa, may help prevent food poisoning.

The compound -- dodecenal -- kills harmful salmonella bacteria and could prove to be a safe, natural food additive effective at protecting people against foodborne illness, says a joint U.S.-Mexican study in the May 26 issue of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.

The antibacterial activity in salsa has been detected in previous research. But this is the first study to isolate a specific antibacterial compound in salsa. Both the leaves and seeds of cilantro, also called coriander, contain about the same amount of dodecenal.

The researchers found dodecenal was about twice as potent as the common medicinal antibiotic gentamicin at killing salmonella bacteria. Dodecenal is the only naturally occurring antibacterial that's more effective than gentamicin at destroying salmonella, according to the researchers.

"We were surprised that dodecenal was such a potent antibiotic," study leader and chemist Isao Kubo, of the University of California, Berkeley, said in a prepared statement.

"The study suggests that people should eat more salsa with their food, especially fresh salsa," Kubo said.

Figs Fight Off Food Poisoning

(HealthDayNews) -- Figs and fig extracts may be able to stop the growth of harmful food microbes such as Escherichia coli and salmonella.

That claim was to be made in a study presentation May 27 at the American Society for Microbiology's general meeting in New Orleans.

Researchers from North Carolina A&T State University sliced and blended figs into a liquid and then added strains of E. coli and salmonella to the liquid. Samples taken after 24 hours showed a reduction in bacterial growth. Liquid control samples not treated with fig juice had increased levels of bacteria.

"These findings can be utilized by the food industry in the future by adding fig extracts, its original and/or modified form, to processed foods. It's active component can also be isolated into pure forms as natural food additives into many food products," researcher Maysoun Salameh said in a prepared statement.

In some countries, figs and fig extracts have been used for many years to treat constipation, bronchitis, wounds, mouth disorders and other ailments.

In a related study also expected to be presented May 27, another group of researchers from the university will present data illustrating the antimicrobial properties of guava extract and its potential use as a food preservative, according to a prepared statement.
